DUO Multi-Factor Authentication

What is multi-factor authentication?

  • According to the NIST, multi-factor authentication (MFA for short), is a security enhancement that allows you to present two pieces of evidence – your credentials – when logging in to an account.  Credentials are defined by three categories:

    • something you know (i.e. a password or pin),
    • something your have (i.e. a smart card),
    • something you are (i.e. fingerprints)
  • MFA is also sometimes referred to as two-factor authentication (2FA) or dual-factor authentication.

What is DUO?

  • DUO is a service used by the Texas A&M University System to facilitate two-factor authentication. With two-factor authentication, you will protect your TAMUCT account with something you KNOW (your password) and something you HAVE (your Duo-enrolled device).
